Long gone are the days that families would spend walking around shopping centres looking for things to buy. People now lead such busy lives that they are unable to visit shops and as such much shop on the internet.
Web shopping involves consumers buying goods directly on the internet without the need for the middle man. It can be said to be a form of e-commerce. Recently, this method of shopping has become very famous. It used to cater to those in the upper earning brackets but with the sprouting of online business and competitive prices, this has become accessible to everyone. Shopping has evolved so much over the years that some experts believe that if the main earner of the household has higher level education, occupation and income they are more likely to do web shopping. One of the main reasons this method of shopping is becoming very popular is because of the evolving nature of technology and people’s exposure to it.
The way in which it works is; the customer will look for an intended product by visiting the various internet websites. He or she may go directly to the retailer’s own website or carry out a search across the range of various retailers presumably, to obtain the best deal. This is done using the various price comparison websites.
Once the customer has found the product while that is intended to be purchased, the customer will have to place it in what is called the shopping cart, which is a type of software that allows the customer to accumulate products before proceeding to pay. The next step is just like in supermarkets, going to the checkout to make payments for the purchases. Some websites would like to create loyalty with their customers by allowing them to register a permanent online account that makes the process of paying for the item quick and easy. Once the transaction is complete, the customer will be sent an email confirming this and often this will be the receipt that the customer retains.
Once the customer has made payments for the purchases while web shopping, the products will be delivered to the customers intended destination. How the products are delivered would depend on the type of product and if there are special requirements for delivery. If the customer for instance has purchased digital products involving media such as pictures, music or movies or even software products, then they will have to be downloaded to the customer’s personal computer.
Another popular method that is being used nowadays is drop shipping. This is when the customer’s order is relayed to the producer of the goods or the main distributor so that the product can be sent directly to the customer without the need to be sent to the retailer in the first instance. This saves the customer and the retailer money.
Picking up the products from the store directly is also preferred by some customers. This is usually used in products where the cost of delivering them to the customer’s doorstep may be too expensive.
So, why does web shopping exist? For the consumers it does not only give them convenience but it gives them a vast array of selection and allows price comparison. For retailers, it increases the value they have in their customer as customers return to them time and time again due to the ease and efficiency.
